Keep Coal In the Hole!!!!

Safeguard the Climate: Tell the BLM to Keep Coal in the Hole!
New Western Colorado Coal Mine Would Sabotage Fight Against Global Warming
Make sure the Bureau of Land Management receives your comments by March 17, 2009.
Coal burning power plants are the largest source of carbon dioxide, the cause of the climate crisis, in the United States. Despite this, the Bureau of Land Management wants to approve a massive new coal mine in Western Colorado.
More coal mining means more coal burning. With the pace of global warming on the rise, a new mine promises disaster. The Bureau of Land Management needs to hear from you: it's time to get serious about a clean and healthy world; it's time to keep coal in the hole.

Called the Red Cliff Mine, the underground mine is located 15 miles northwest of Grand Junction. When finished, it will be the largest coal mine in Colorado.
Not only will the coal be shipped off and burned:
The mine will vent massive amounts of methane, a greenhouse gas 21 times more potent than carbon dioxide. The vented methane will increase Colorado's global warming pollution by 3%.
The mine threatens wildlife, wild places, and clean air. The Hunter Canyon Proposed Wilderness Area will be trammeled and wildlife, like the white-tailed prairie dog and burrowing owl, will be exterminated.
Poor air quality in the region will get worse.
Reject the Red Cliff Mine
The Red Cliff Mine is a global warming disaster waiting to happen. The Bureau is asking for comments on this misguided mine. Your comments will help pressure the agency to reject the Red Cliff Mine, start taking global warming seriously, and safeguard the American West.
Use the sample letter or write your own to the Bureau of Land Management. Your comments have to be received by March 17, 2009.
